Davenport cruises through
Lindsay Davenport in action against Patty Schnyder
Lindsay Davenport was seldom troubled by Schnyder
Third seed Lindsay Davenport breezed into the last 16 with a 6-2 6-3 win over Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

The American had few problems in seeing off the 22-year-old ranked 30th in the world.

In the opening set she raced to a 4-0 lead in 12 minutes as Schnyder struggled with her serve.

Davenport went two breaks and 4-1 up in the second set before Schnyder pulled one break back to get to 4-3.

The Swiss player saved the first of two match points with a forehand winner but hit a double fault on the second.

Davenport will play Jelena Dokic in the fourth round after the Yugoslav beat Barbara Schett 6-3 7-5.

The 14th seed made short work of Schett in the first set, but the Australian 21st seed put up more of a fight in the second.

Shock of the day

Asked about Monday's match against Dokic, Davenport said: "It is going to be a tough match, but I have a good record against big hitters."

Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, seeded 31, pulled off the shock of the day in the women's singles by ousting French sixth seed Amelie Mauresmo 6-4 6-4.

Mauresmo's ninth seeded compatriot Nathalie Tauziat had no such problems against unseeded Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, winning 6-0 6-3.

Nadejda Petrova became the second unseeded Russian to reach the fourth round by beating Silvia Farina Elia 6-3 6-3.

Petrova was too powerful and accurate from the back of the court for the 16th-seeded Italian.

The 19-year-old will now play defending champion Venus Williams, the second seed, who beat Russian 29th seed Elena Likhovtseva 6-2 6-2.

Venus's younger sister Serena beat Petrova in both the Australian and French Opens where she also reached the fourth round.

Two match points

Petrova broke Farina Elia's serve in the fifth game of the first set, which she wrapped up in 27 minutes after a rain break.

The Russian broke to love for 3-2 in the second set after a rare excursion to the net set up the breakpoint.

She won on her second match point in 57 minutes to join the unseeded Krasnoroutskaya in the second week.

Belgian seventh seed Kim Clijsters also had a comfortable win, beating Spain's Angeles Montolio, seeded 27, 7-5 6-2.

French Open finalist Clijsters next meets Meghann Shaughnessy, the American 17th seed, who beat South Africa's Amanda Coetzer, seed six places higher, 7-6 (7/4) 2-6 6-1.
