Justine survives but Arantxa exits
Anke Huber
Huber eased through in straight sets
Belgian Justine Henin advanced as expected to the third round of the women's singles but only after being given a huge scare by Dutch player Kristie Boogert.

The French Open semi-finalist trailed 4-1 in the second set after losing the first 7-5, but battled back to win the Lowlands encounter.

The Belgian broke back to 3-4 and then a further break of serve enabled Henin to level the contest.

Back to her best, Henin took the deciding set 6-2.

She now plays American 28th seed Lisa Raymond, who earlier crushed the last British survivor in the women's draw, Karen Cross, 6-0 6-1.

Russian number 10 seed Elena Dementieva also survived a tough test to defeat unseeded German Bianka Lamade 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Fifth seed Serena Williams had no such problems as she defeated Barbara Rittner 6-4 6-0, while fourth seed Jennifer Capriati accounted for Francesca Schiavone 6-3 6-1.
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario
Arantxa contemplates her defeat

But number 13 seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, runner-up at Wimbledon in 1995 and 1996, was shocked by American youngster Lilia Osterloh 7-6 7-5.

The three-time French Open winner, playing in her 15th Wimbledon, became another victim of court two, the so-called graveyard of the champions as she struggled to shake off a wrist injury.

Sanchez's compatriot Conchita Martinez, the 1994 champion, defeated American Sandra Cacic 7-5 6-4.

Monday's giantkiller Virginia Ruano Pascual, conqueror of top seed Martina Hingis, was unable to repeat the feat as she lost 6-3 7-6 to the highly-rated but unseeded Russian 17-year-old Lina Krasnoroutskaya.

Several seeds had easy passages to the third round.

Sandrine Testud defeated Karina Habsudova 6-0 6-1 and Anke Huber beat German compatriot Marlene Weingartner 7-5 6-1.

Bulgarian 12th seed Magdalena Maleeva overcame Russia's Elena Bovina 7-5 7-5.
