| England seek elite one-day squad Hussain and Fletcher have plenty to ponder England will chose a 25 strong one-day squad later this summer as a first step towards boosting their poor limited overs record. The England and Wales Cricket Board made the decision to establish what is effectively an initial party for 2003 World Cup following an emergency meeting with the selectors at Lord's. England lost all their six games in the NatWest Series to extend their losing streak to 11 in one-day internationals. It prompted the ECB to call a meeting with coach Duncan Fletcher, David Graveney, chairman of selectors, and Geoff Miller, the remaining selector. The one-day party are unlikely to be given central contracts, but Fletcher will attempt to blend them into an outfit capable of competing in South Africa in two years time. Fletcher first suggested the idea of an elite squad at a meeting with captain Nasser Hussain and Graveney and Miller earlier this week.
"Not all that squad will go to Zimbabwe later this year and it's not a closed shop, but the public should know from the selectors what path we want to go down. "This squad will not be a contracted scenario but it gives a clear message to the younger guys that they could have a part to play in the next World Cup." The selectors gave their briefing to ECB chairman Lord MacLaurin, management advisory committee chairman Brian Bolus, cricket operations director John Carr and chief executive Tim Lamb. |
