| Four of the best Waugh and Gilchrist have often thrived against Pakistan Australia meet Pakistan at Lord's on Saturday in a repeat of the 1999 World Cup final. BBC Sport Online looks back to four other memorable one-day matches between the two teams. Hobart, 10 December 1992 - Match tied A thrilling contest at the Bellerive Oval saw Australia total 228 for seven in their 50 overs after skipper Mark Taylor had won the toss. Dean Jones top scored with 53 off 73 balls and shared a second wicket stand of 92 with Taylor, who made 46. Pakistan lost both openers with only 10 runs on the board but an innings of 66 by Salim Malik put them back in the game.
They picked off the runs but the task proved just beyond them in the last over as the scores finished level with Pakistan on 228 for nine and man of the match Mujtaba unbeaten on 56. Lahore, 14 October 1988 - Pakistan won by losing fewer wickets A year on from their World Cup semi-final victory over Pakistan, Australia returned to the Gaddafi Stadium for the second game in a best-of-three one-day series. An opening stand of 71 between David Boon and Geoff Marsh set them on their way to a score of 229 for eight in 45 overs, with Marsh making 89.
Mudassar was the fourth man out for 76 but Ijaz Ahmed made a rapid 39 and Salim Yosuf and Abdul Qadir saw out the final over to see their side home. It was enough to give them the series win as the other two games had to be abandoned. Perth, 2 January 1987 - Pakistan won by 1 wicket Four teams took part in the B&H Challenge in Western Australia with England defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the final. But the closest game was played five days earlier when Pakistan came out on top against Australia despite a brilliant innings of 121 off 113 balls by Dean Jones.
They looked down and out at 96 for five despite opener Qasim Omar's 69. But Australia had reckoned without Asif Mujtaba and stands of 52 with Manzoor Elahi (48), 43 with Salim Yousuf (31) and 43 with Wasim Akram turned the match on its head. Mujtaba scored an unbeaten 60 off 56 balls to see his team to a tremendous win. Lahore, 10 November 1998 - Australia won by 6 wickets India made 316 for seven to beat Pakistan at Dhaka in January 1998, a one-day record score for a side batting second. It was equalled 10 months later as Australia surpassed a Pakistan score of 315 for eight in a game which saw four players score centuries.
Skipper Steve Waugh contributed 30 and Ponting reached an unbeaten 124 as Australia got home off the fifth ball of the 49th over to complete a 3-0 series whitewash. Ijaz Ahmed had earlier made 111 off 109 balls for Pakistan, his eght one-day century, with Yousuf Youhana scoring exactly 100. |
