Derbyshire's Mathew Dowman celebrated his 27th birthday with an unbeaten 145 against Pakistan at Derby as the game succumbed to the inevitable draw.

The left-hander cracked 20 boundaries and two sixes in registering his ninth first-class century as Derbyshire established a 151-run lead.

But the challenge for Pakistan's batsmen to score 152 to win the match off a minimum of 17 overs proved too much.

Yousuf Youhana had time to again fail with the bat, making just four before he was lbw to Trevor Smith.

As the game petered out to a draw, Imran Farhat and Abdur Razzaq used what time was left for batting practice to see Pakistan to 64 for one at the close of play.

Razzaq was on 33 and Farhat 24 when the decision came to call play off early.

Rain delay

Play began 80 minutes late after water seeped off the covers and saturated an area adjacent to the square.

But after it was allowed time to dry and covered with matting play finally got underway with 20 overs lost in the day's play.

Dowman dominated Derbyshire's response and reached his century after tea.

He went to the interval on 92, but Pakistan fed Derbyshire's batsmen runs to encourage a declaration, and Dowman cashed in on the generous bowling.

Captain Dominic Cork fell to part-time leg-spinner Imran Farhat, but Dowman helped add 68 runs off just 11 overs to set up the declaration.

When Derbyshire delayed the declaration, Waqar Younis brought back Shoaib Akhtar and Saqlain Mushtaq.

After Dowman lofted Saqlain for six, Cork pulled his side off the field with the lead at 151 and a minimum of 17 overs remaining..

Swing bowling

When play started Akhtar and Abdur Razzaq went without reward in the 40 minute session prior to lunch.

After the break Luke Sutton went for 34 after an 86-run stand with Dowman for the third wicket.

He was caught behind off Razzaq who got the ball to move appreciably in the conditions.

Chris Bassano, while not looking convincing at the crease, added 53 with Dowman before Waqar Younis claimed him lbw.

Cork missed a straight ball to fall lbw and after some lofty blows from Dowman, the declaration came.
