"If England believe their defeat against Pakistan at Old Trafford has anything to do with umpiring they are kidding themselves," said McGrath.

"They paid the price for their negative approach to the last day.

"England have improved a lot over the last couple of seasons, but when the pressure was on in the second Test, they reverted to the bad old days.

"The tactics they employed in looking to survive rather than attack just invited Pakistan to get on top of them."

And he warned that he also enjoyed bowling to defence-minded batsmen.

"If I find myself bowling at a side locked in defensive mode, I know they are playing right into my hands.

"If that had been Australia batting, we would have pushed on until around tea rather than allow Pakistan to turn the screw and then see whether we were in range of victory."

"England simply weren't interested in winning the game which showed the leopard hasn't changed all of its spots.

"There are still scars around for us to open up this summer if they do not learn from what happened at Old Trafford."

Writing in the Daily Express, McGrath added: "A lot was made of the missed no-balls, but as far as I am concerned that was simply an excuse.

"Pakistan also had decisions which went against them during the match."
