| England claim historic victory Champagne moment: England savour a stunning win Third Test, Karachi Day Five England win by six wickets Click here for scorecard Graham Thorpe steered England to their first Test and series win in Pakistan since 1962 after a thrilling climax to the third Test in near darkness in Karachi. Hussain joined Thorpe at the crease after Graeme Hick (40) was dismissed with the tourists requiring just 20 runs for victory. But the duo steadied the ship to take England to a memorable victory. The partnership between Hick and Thorpe set the ball rolling after the tourists were reduced to 65-3. Patient play kept the run-rate ticking along at the required four-an-over with Thorpe's half-century and Hick's innings providing the foundations for the epic victory. 16th victim
Earlier in the day England took six Pakistan wickets for 30 runs to leave them chasing a target of 176 for victory. It seemed unlikely at the start of play that the tourists would ever find themselves in such a fantastic position. Hussain's side needed to claim Pakistan wickets, early, in order to give themselves hope. Their wish came true almost immediately when nightwatchman Saqlain Mushtaq became the Ashley Giles' 16th victim of the series. Giles, a revelation for England, tormented the Pakistan attack with his variety of slow left-arm spin. The Warwickshire star was well-supported by pacemen Darren Gough and Craig White. Great performance Pakistan's pair of Yousuf Youhana and Salim Elahi seemed set to frustrate England as they built a 50-partnership.
But on 27, Youhana edged an extravagant hook off White to the grateful Alec Stewart behind stumps. Elahi then pushed an Giles delivery into the grasp of Thorpe at silly mid-off. The home side were on the backfoot and Giles gave them no time to recover when he took the wicket of Razzaq with the help of a fine low catch from Michael Atherton. Moments later England skipper Hussain took a similar catch to dismiss his opposite number, Moin, off the bowling of White before Stewart spectacularly ran-out Waqar Younis. Gough rounded off a great performance by taking young Danish Kaneria with a brilliant yorker. England's innings began to look shaky after the spin of Saqlain claimed openers Michael Atherton and Marcus Trescothick. The Surrey man went on to take the wicket of Alec Stewart but it was not enough to stave off defeat. |
