![]() | Monday, 11 December, 2000, 13:02 GMT Can England now be a world-class force ? ![]() England have triumphed over adversity to break Pakistan's stranglehold in Karachi. Nasser Hussain's team enjoyed their first series victory against Pakistan since 1962. Are England now a cricketing force on the world stage or have they still to prove their worth? Tell us what you think? In their first tour of Pakistan for 13 years, Nasser Hussain and his team took a long-awaited series victory. Not since Ted Dexter's first tour in 1962 has a series on Pakistani soil ended in England's favour. England's chances only turned in the final hours to grant their series win. But now the team have now notched three successive series victories following wins over Zimbabwe and the West Indies. So are England now a world-class force or are they yet to sustain the form and consistency to prove they are world-beaters? And will the real test of England's turnaround be the Ashes next year? Tell us what you think. Sorry, but any cricket result, especially in India/Pakistan has to be tainted by the suspicion that bookmakers have had more influence over the result than the players. I would love to think England could become a world cricket power. I will believe it possible when they have beaten the Aussies and hold the Ashes. A marvellous result for England, following a great victory over the West Indies. However, if we are to give Australia a run for their money, England must learn to score their runs more quickly. 300, rather than 180, is par for the course for a truly world class team. England are starting to show the kind of determination required to get to the top. But there's still a big leap for them up to the top where the South Africans and the Australians reside.
Peter Styles, England England a world force in cricket, don't make me laugh. A single Test series win can never be used to measure the strength of a team. Teams do not become a world force overnight. We have learned a great deal about mental stamina in the win aganst Pakistan, an aspect absent in many England teams in the past. If this can be continued, this belief that the game is not over until the last ball is bowled, we can be a great side again. The recent rise of New Zealand is testament to the difference a new mentality can make to the same squad. Keep up the good work. England have a way to go before we could be classed as one of the top international teams. They have a good solid backbone of a team now, and have at last found what they have long needed, an intelligent and strong captain and a classy all-rounder. As for Australia and this seemingly easy Ashes victory everyone talks about - well they're rubbish aren't they, what have they done really, apart form set the world record for consecutive Test victories and win the World Cup. Beating Pakistan on their own turf is a big achievement for any country, but getting an idea of being a world power again should be avoided. There is still a long way to go. After so many defeats and batting collapses in the past it's quite amazing that we have beaten Pakistan. So we don't stand a chance and can't play spin, eh Wasim? Yeah, right. Don't forget that we beat South Africa in England a couple of years ago too. England may not yet be world beaters but we are on the up and up so look out. Well done England on a superb performance, it now looks like the team have the mental strength to carry on improving to their long forgotten greatness.
Mike Harlow, UK Here we go again. England are scraping the barrel, they win a game and now they are world beaters again. You've got to love this place. Bring on the Aussies or South Africa and then we'll see. Keep dreaming boys. One victory does not make you the best team in the world. I think England can once more be a strong team. For me they are favourites for the next World Cup because they have a talented one day team that is improving every day. The cricket world will be so much better if England find their old form. Well done to the whole team - you've restored my hope in English cricket. Australia's a tough prospect, but we'll sure as hell give them a run for their money next year - at home, no injuries, Hussain back to form, good weather - who knows? With this team and the crowd behind them we could just be looking at recovering the Ashes next summer. A truly great victory for England, proving conclusively that they rank as one of the greatest sides in the world - well led, well motivated and allowing the talent to flow - congratulations to our boys Respect is due for an outstanding performance in Pakistan. But remember the backbone of the side (Athers, Stewart, Gough, Caddick, Hussain, Thorpe) are all over 30 and coming to the end of their careers. In order to maintain our newfound position as real contenders in world cricket, youngsters of a similar standard must be found soon. And I suspect Australia will still be too strong next summer. They are now contenders at the highest level and will at least fight back when things go wrong.
Robert Bailey, USA Australia are still several players better than England are throughout the team, while South Africa, New Zealand and India would probably still win home series against us, if not away series, since they all have greater consistency and are less prone to middle order collapses. That said, England have improved and are apparently less suspect in the middle order, while they are apparently of an altogether tougher mindset. They will need that against the Australians next year. Great victory, that confirms the beginning of the rebuilding of character and confidence under Nasser Hussain's leadership. The real test will be against the two Southern Hemisphere giants Australia and South Africa. At this level it is as much about confidence as technique and I will back them at home for the Ashes. What goes down must go back up. England are on the ascendancy in world cricket, all credit to Nasser Hussain for not losing his cool when there were good reasons for doing so. Brilliant result - under Nasser Hussain and Duncan Fletcher we have become hard to beat, there is competition for places and a good deal more backbone than for ages. Nasser Hussain has looked the part as captain from day one and fully deserves his third consecutive series win.
Erik Meijerink, The Netherlands Certainly it's one of England's greatest achievements ever. Full credit to Nasser Hussain's captaincy and Atherton's experience. After beating the West Indies and Pakistan, England are emerging as the third power of Test cricket. Certainly our best ever team for over a decade and our best result since we last won the Ashes in Oz in the mid-eighties. At last we have found a few players who really want to go out there and do it. Praise to the newcomers Trescothick and Giles, but well done Craig White for completely transforming yourself as a cricketer. Atherton was his usual brilliant best and well done Nasser Hussain on giving the players belief and guts. When we get Vaughan and Cork back we will get stronger still. Roll on Sri Lanka and then those Aussies next summer. Congratulations to England. I was one of the Pakistanis who were writing England off at the beginning of the series. Pakistan, however were overrated, with their lack of genuine class spinners apart from Saqlain, and England's boring, but precise batting approach yielding results in the end. Too many one-day games have destroyed the Pakistani batsmen's mentality. They should learn how to keep their wicket, however learning off Atherton would be a bit drastic. Also Moin Khan, although a good motivator, is a useless tactical captain, and his decision to bowl Saqlain in the dark instead of a fast bowler, just said it all. Totally incredible, after years of depression England really seem to be coming out of a slump. This was a fantastic performance and I really think that, as long as Sri Lanka don't turn us over, the Aussies are there for the taking! Well done, I still can't quite believe it! | See also: Other top Sports Talk stories: Links to top Sports Talk stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||
