England skipper Nasser Hussain saluted his side's magnificent Test series victory in Pakistan and hailed it as even more satisfying than the summer success over the West Indies.

Even for Hussain a first Tour victory in Pakistan since 1961-62 came unexpectedly.

"This is the better victory. Beating the West Indies is a good performance but I think we were expected to do that," admitted Hussain.

"Coming here and winning is the better victory. Nobody expected that, not even me."

The England captain then outlined the gameplan his side had employed throughout the series.

"Our whole thing in this series has been to stay with them, put the pressure on Pakistan," said Hussain.

Graeme Hick
Graeme Hick gave Thorpe fantatsic support
"The moment they get a bit behind the pressure is on them.

"Today (Monday) showed what happens if you stay in the game long enough and put the pressure on the opposition."

Hussain added: "The thing we've done too easily in the past is give the game up on 1st innings.

"You look at our first innings' here and we've got 400, 400 and 380 with contributions all the way down the order and partnerships.

"If you do that you are always in the game.

"We've got a good coach and a good set-up. Speaking to Duncan (Fletcher) in the last couple of weeks he thinks we should have won the one-dayers and would have if we had used our brains - the technique was there."

Graham Thorpe was naturally delighted after his unbeaten 64 guided England to victory.

"I'm very proud to be part of this magnificent team effort. We've worked so hard since we arrived in Pakistan," said Thorpe. "The last hour was chaotic.

"Facing Waqar Younis in normal conditions is difficult enough, in the dark is another thing. It reminded me of my club days."

But Thorpe was quick to point out that everyone in the England side had played their part in a memorable victory.

"We've had great team spirit. We've had to dig deep on many occasions and everybody has had to stick together."
