Northern Division strugglers Newcastle United produced the shock of the FA Women's Cup fifth round with a penalty shoot-out win at top-flight Watford.

Leeds also reached the quarter-finals via a shoot-out, beating Chelsea 7-6 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw.

The favourites to reach May's final, Arsenal and Everton, both had comfortable wins.

The Gunners beat Southern Division West Ham 8-1 and the Toffees won 3-0 at non-league Leicester City.

Newcastle won 2-1 on penalties

Newcastle's Elaine Sedgwick had an eventful afternoon at both ends of the pitch as the Magpies pulled off a major surprise.

After Watford goalkeeper Marie Hourihan had gifted the visitors a 15th minute own goal, Sedgwick put through her own net to give the home side a 30th minute equaliser.

The Hornets then went 3-1 ahead, Ashlee Hincks scoring in the 57th minute and Cory Daniels 12 minutes later.

But Sedgwick sparked a late Newcastle fight-back with an 82nd minute goal, which was followed within two minutes by the leveller from Julie Twaddle.

And after extra time brought no further goals Sedgwick hit a shoot-out penalty to help send the Magpies flying back to the north east in celebratory mood.

Chelsea 1-1 Leeds United (aet)
Leeds won 8-7 on penalties

All the drama came in the closing stages at Chelsea, who took the lead through Lizzy Edwards in the 112th minute only for Amanda Barr to equalise straight from the re-start.

Some high quality penalties followed in the shoot-out, but after keeper Emma Higgins had saved Chelsea's eighth spot-kick England winger Sue Smith won the tie for Leeds.

Cardiff City 3-2 Doncaster Rovers Belles (aet)

A tremendous Loren Dykes header 12 minutes into extra time earned Cardiff a place in the quarter-finals.

In a game of fluctuating fortunes Doncaster had taken the lead through Veronica Cantoro, then Cardiff swept in front with goals by Nicola Cousins and Dykes before Liz Hansen grabbed a last minute equaliser.

Extra time was equally as tight, but Dykes' second goal proved decisive.

Blackburn Rovers 4-1 Liverpool

Chantelle Parry gave Liverpool a 51st minute lead, but after Natalie Preston's 59th minute equaliser the home side took control.

Katie Anderton, Levi Penny and Karen Burke all score in the final 18 minutes to wrap up a well earned victory.

Leicester City 0-3 Everton

It took until five minutes before half-time for Everton to break down their battling Midland Combination opponents.

But following England striker Jody Handley's opener the visitors never looked like letting their lead slip.

Jill Scott and Handley hit second half goals to confirm the top flight team's superiority.

Fulham 0-2 Birmingham City

Two Heather Scheuber goals took Blues through to the quarter-finals at the expense of the Southern Division leaders.

After putting the visitors in front with an excellent ninth minute lob, the England Under-21 midfielder scored her second from close range seven minutes before half-time.

Arsenal 8-1 West Ham

It was easy for Arsenal against the Southern Division Hammers, whose consolation goal came from Samantha Puttick.

At the other end Lianne Sanderson scored twice and there was one apiece for Gemma Davison, Kelly Smith, Mary Phillip, Rachel Yankey and Karen Carney.

An own goal completed the rout.

Lincoln City 5-1 Portsmouth

Lincoln will join Newcastle as the Northern Division representatives in the quarter-final draw after a convincing victory over Southern Division Pompey.

A first half hat-trick by Jody Snelson put the Imps on the road to victory.

Brook Chaplin pulled a goal back early in the second half, but hopes of a fight-back were wiped out as Megan Harris drilled home a penalty then Carla Ward competed the scoring.
