Dean Saunders reassured of Wrexham future

By Ian Hunt

Wrexham owner Geoff Moss talks to BBC Wales' Sport Wales show

Dean Saunders has been told his job at Wrexham is safe - despite the club finishing in its lowest position.

The Wrexham boss has already culled 11 players after the club finished 11th in the Blue Square Premier League and 41 points adrift of champions Stevenage.

But owner Geoff Moss insists the former Wales striker will be given time.

"Dean has our full support going forward," said Moss. "Don't think that because we're mid-table, people haven't worked really hard."

Striker Wes Baynes and midfielders Mark Jones and Silvio Spann are among those 11 players who have not had their Racecourse contract renewed as Saunders, who has already signed more than 50 players in his 18 months at Wrexham, plans his assault on promotion to the Football League.

And Saunders has already warned his out-of-contract players they may face a pay-cut or face leaving the club as he hopes to refresh his squad and bids to get out of non-league.

The Wrexham chief, who has already signed a pre-contract agreement with Histon midfielder Nathaniel Knight-Percival, hopes insists he is to sign "five or six players" this summer.

Saunders pledged to get Wrexham back into the Football League as soon as possible when he took charge in October 2008.

He was unable to win promotion at the first attempt as Wrexham ended the 2008-09 campaign in tenth, 15 points off the play-offs.

And his failure to improve on that this season - and finish 20 points adrift of the play-offs - that has led a section of supporters to question whether he should remain in charge next year.

But as Saunders begins the huge task of revamping an over-sized squad, Moss insists Saunders has the full backing of the board.

Asked whether Saunders would be given three or four years to end Wrexham's League exile, Moss said, "I don't think you can answer that question at all. I think you just have to wait and see.

"But it's interesting that people like Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Howard Kendall at Everton were given time to get things right.

"I listened to what Keith Hill said after he got Rochdale promoted this season. He said 'I had a plan and was given time to carry out that plan without boardroom interference.'

"That's how we want to do things at Wrexham.

"Dean has sorted out a lot of things behind the scenes. He has his own physio now and his own fitness, conditioning and nutrition guy. They are his own people.

"There's nobody you could work with who'd work harder, who is so enthusiastic and demanding.

"Certain calls were made during the winter which we don't agree with. He has our full support going forward."

Saunders used 32 players in his bid to win promotion but was forced to admit too few of them were cut out for non-league football.

"We're maybe one or two players light of the right type of player for this league," said Moss.

"We are not going to become a side that just hoofs the ball forward. That's not the way we see Wrexham going forward. But there has got to be a better mix.

"We're going to have a much tighter budget. We'll have less players, but hopefully we'll have some better quality.

"We've signed Nat-Knight Percival, who's got a really good goal-scoring record - 30 in the last three seasons - and we hope to announce another signing soon."

Moss said revenue from the Crusaders rugby league side, who share the Racecourse with the football team, was vital in helping to keep Wrexham afloat.

"Fifty percent of the costs of running the Racecourse will be borne by Crusaders," said Moss.

"We've been getting gates of 2,100 to 2,300. Most people can do the maths on that. It simply doesn't pay. It loses money. So by having somebody share the costs with that, it starts to offsets some of the losses."
