Former Wales striker Dean Saunders has been Wrexham boss for 18 months
Dean Saunders has warned Wrexham's players of a pay-cut or face leaving the club as the Racecourse boss bids for Football League promotion.
The Wrexham chief insists he is to sign "five or six players" this summer as he tries to get the club out of the Blue Square Premier.
"Our problem is not preventing goals, it is scoring them as we've missed too many chances this term," said Saunders.
"That's the reason we've finished 11th so I need people who can score."
Wrexham finished a frustrating season on a high on Saturday as they beat Hayes and Yeading 1-0 to seal their 22nd clean sheet this season, breaking a 73-year-old club record for goals conceded.
But no player reached a double-figure goal tally so Saunders, himself a former renowned international and top-class striker, is targeting hitmen to fire them out of non-league.
The Dragons finished their second season in the Blue Square a huge 41 points adrift of champions Stevenage and 20 points short of a play-off place.
Ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa forward Saunders has already made an incredible 50 signings since replacing Brian Little in the Wrexham hotseat in October 2008 but has warned of more ins and outs at the Racecourse this summer.
"I'm going to have to lose a few players," admits former Newcastle and Blackburn coach Saunders.
"I've told them as we haven't done well enough so I'm going to have to change it. That is the ruthless world of football.
"I'm not going to sleep very until I tell the players what their futures are but it is something I have to do.
"Probably nearly all of them that want to stay will have to take less money to stay - then some might turn those contracts down and also leave.
"But considering how many clean sheets we've had this season, its amazing how low down the table we've finished - and it's amazing with the players we've got we haven't scored them.
"We have created loads and loads of chances but haven't scored them - and it comes back to haunt you.
"We haven't scored enough goals so have not finished where we should have. And I have to get players in who suit this league and push us out of it.
"To do well in this league you have to be able defend set plays, head the ball out of your own box and be able to score from set plays - and we haven't done that very well."
Wrexham have already signed a pre-contract agreement with Histon midfielder Nathaniel Knight-Percival as Saunders starts another summer rebuilding project at the Racecourse.
Saunders, who is in his first managerial job, admits signing so many young yet promising players from Premier League or Championship clubs to play in the bruising Blue Square Premier was a failure.
He insists he had "learned" from his misjudgement and will bid to sign some experienced "big fellas" like Arron Brown and Kris O'Leary to battle Wrexham back into the Football League.
