He joins the club for the rest of the season as the bottom-of-the-league side look to build on Saturday's much-needed win at Lincoln. Martinez was expected to arrive at the Vetch last week, but the deal hit last-minute complications. Defender David Theobald and midfielder David Moss have had their contracts cancelled by mutual agreement with the club, though. Swans Director of Football Brian Flynn has brought in nine new players and let seven go from the squad he inherited from Nick Cusack, and concedes that after Martinez there will be no more changes before the end of the season.
Flynn told BBC Wales: "He's 29, he's experienced and he knows the English league. "He loves talking about football and he's ready for the relegation fight." Speaking during the Swans' FAW Premier Cup quarter-final at Newport, Martinez said he was ready for the challenge ahead: "I know it's a massive job but I'm delighted to be here," said the Spaniard. "There's enough quality in the squad to avoid relegation, but we need to prove it - be confident, look forward and get a positive attitude on the pitch." |
