| Tuesday, 18 February, 2003, 18:30 GMT Swansea 2-0 Cambridge Utd
A Marc Richards double fired rejuvenated Swansea to a deserved 2-0 victory over Cambridge and lifted them out of the relegation zone. Brian Flynn's loan signing from Blackburn opened the scoring after 58 minutes and sealed the win eight minutes from time. The thrilling Swansea display was tempered by an injury to defender Terry Evans who was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg. The Swans took the lead in a scrappy first half when Cambridge goalkeeper Shaun Marshall could only parry a Steve Watkin header. Richards was on hand to roll the ball home. Roberto Martinez provided the perfect through ball for Richards' second as he took it in his stride to blast confidently past Marshall. "I said on Tuesday night that we had to bounce back today and we did it well, especially in the second half," said Swans boss Brian Flynn. "We started creating problems and Roberto was influential. He is a good player, he can pass, he's got composure and he's the type of player who suits our style of play." Swansea have gathered 13 points from the last 18 on offer to move up to 19th in the division, their highest position of the season. Swansea: Freestone, Jason Smith, Tate, Evans, Howard, Mumford, Martinez, Britton, Watkin, Richards, Williams. Cambridge Utd: Ma, Murray, Tann, Newey, Wanless, Fleming, Bridges, Kitson, Youngs, Riza. Referee: A Leake (Lancashire) |
