Oxford United defender Rhys Day says he expects to be out of action until September but is determined to win back his first team place when he returns.

The Welshman has been struggling with a tendonitis in his knee during the close season but had hoped to be back sooner.

"I want to get back in the first team, but first I have to get myself back fit," he told BBC Oxford.

"It's going to be longer than expected. I have seen specialists and they all say I will be back by mid-September."

He added: "You have ups and downs in your career and this injury is a down.

"That's how football is: one minute you are in the clouds then you are on the ground. I'll bounce back and I want to be up in the clouds again with Oxford."
