Oxford City have signed defender James Clarke after neighbours Oxford United cancelled his contract.
The 19-year-old has played 32 league appearances for United but was told that he is not in Chris Wilder's plans.
City manager Justin Merritt says the right-back has the qualities to return to professional football.
"He has some very good attributes. We want to take the best youngsters in the area and help them develop and help them develop us," said Merritt.
Wilder told the U's website: "He is a smashing lad and we wish him well. He will be looked after and enjoy his football with them."
Clarke is likely to straight into the City squad for the Southern League Premier Division game at Rugby Town.
