| Thursday, 31 October, 2002, 07:56 GMT Marshall's plea to Royle ![]() Marshall has worked hard to beat the doubters Ipswich goalkeeper Andy Marshall has urged new manager Joe Royle to take his lead and ignore the Portman Road boo-boys. Sections of the Tractor Boys crowd chanted songs disapproving of Royle's impending appointment during Saturday's 1-0 defeat at home to Gillingham. Royle himself said he had no idea what he had done to upset the Ipswich supporters. But it is his status as a very popular former player with arch-rivals Norwich that has made him unpopular with some of Ipswich faithful.
Marshall himself has never won over certain parts of the support since moving to Portman Road from Norwich in 2001. But he told BBC Sport Online that the barracking does not affect him - and he urged Royle to take the same approach. "There is a small minority who are still not happy that I am at this football club, simply because of the fact that I came from Norwich," he said. "I don't know what I can do to turn those feelings around but it is a small minority and you know you've got the majority of the fans behind you. "I'm sure the manager will just go about it the same way and get on with his job. While you've got the majority of the fans behind you, you've got to give it everything you've got."
"I'm not going to let them put me off in any way and I'm sure the manager won't either." But Marshall would still like to have all the fans on board. "They are what the football club is about and they do pay our wages so they have every right to vent their feelings. But hopefully we can turn those feelings around," he said. |
