| Ipswich out on penalties
Liberec win 4-2 on penalties E-mail your reaction to Football Talk Ipswich tumbled out of the Uefa Cup on penalties after being two minutes from going through. Joe Royle's team held out for 88 minutes against a Liberec team who only missed out on a Champions League place to an away-goals defeat by AC Milan. But they rarely threatened a stubborn Ipswich side. Baffour Gyan's scrappy goal took the tie into extra-time, where neither side could find a goal. Penalty misses by Jermaine Wright and Finidi George proved costly as Liberec slotted all their penalties to win 4-2.
The ever-willing Gyans, whose most telling contribution at Portman Road was an horrendous miss from six yards was the biggest thorn in Ipswich's side all night. Ipswich's defensive resolve had rarely been tested in the first 45 minutes but Liberec displayed more urgency after the break. Martin Zboncak was off-target with a fierce strike from distance before Petr Johana forced Marshall into his first save in the 47th minute. There was danger for Ipswich when Tomas Janu burst into the box and his cute backheel set up Petr Papousek, but from 18 yards out he blasted the ball over the bar. There was no shortage of commitment and bravery from Ipswich and when Johana whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, Fabian Wilnus dived in to head the ball for a corner, even though he knew he would clatter into the post. Ipswich were two minutes away from the winning post when Liberec levelled with a scrappy goal. Petr Lukas looped a header, from a corner, back across goal, Gyan headed down through a crowd of bodies and the ball squirmed through Marshall's grasp and over the line. Ipswich almost took the lead a minute into extra-time, with Antonin Kinsky desperately grabbing Darren Bent's shot on the line at the second attempt. Neither side appeared to want the lottery of penalties, and tried to force the pace in extra-time. Papousek twice came within inches of breaking the deadlock, first firing the ball across the face of goal from a tight angle, and then grazing the outside of the post with a shot from the edge of the box.
