| Monday, 9 December, 2002, 15:20 GMT Terriers snap up Ashcroft Struggling Huddersfield Town have signed Wigan Athletic striker Lee Ashcroft on loan in a bid to bolster their goal-shy attack. Ashcroft has joined the Terriers for an initial month with the possibility of an extended stay if finances allow.
Cash-strapped Town have financed the move through a sponsorship deal to meet the 30-year-old's wages. Huddersfield have scored just 15 goals in the league this season and manager Mick Wadsworth hopes Ashcroft's arrival will spark an upturn in fortunes. He said: "Lee's move here is great news. I've known him since my days in the England youth set-up and he is a very good player. "He is an aggressive forward who can both make and score goals, and we know how important that is for us at the moment. "I am looking forward to seeing him and Andy Booth in action on Saturday. "He will certainly give us an added punch up-front," Wadsworth told the club's website. Ashcroft joined Wigan from Grimsby Town for 350,000 in August, 2000 , but has scored just nine goals for the club. The former Preston North End and West Brom striker, who has played just once for the Latics this season and is currently down the pecking order at the JJB Stadium, has just completed a loan spell at Port Vale. |
