Wigan cheer for Flynn
Mike Flynn celebrates scoring against FC Porto
Mike Flynn can play up front or in midfield
Barry Town utility player Mike Flynn has stepped up into the Nationwide League after agreeing a move to Wigan Athletic.

The 21-year-old signed for the Division Two club for 15,000 after completing a medical on Thursday.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell said he had been impressed with Flynn after seeing him play for Wales in the semi-professional internationals at the end of last season.

There were quite a few other clubs in for him, but we've managed to get in first
Wigan manager Paul Jewell

"I think he can become a very good player," he told the Wigan Athletic website.

"He did well for Wales and I've watched him several other times. To be fair there were quite a few other clubs in for him, but we've managed to get in first.

"Mike's only 21 and can play in a number of positions so if we can get a couple more youngsters in and then a bit more experience I think we'll be alright."

Flynn joined Barry from Newport County in 2001 and played a key role in Barry winning both the League of Wales championship and the Welsh Cup, scoring 20 goals in 45 games.

Double winner

After an excellent start to last season, including scoring in the 3-1 European Cup home win over FC Porto, Flynn struggled through the middle of the term after suffering a mystery illness.

But he recaptured his form with a bang, collecting medals as part of the League of Wales Championship and Welsh Cup winning squad, and adding his name to the scoresheet in the 4-1 win over Bangor City in the cup final.

Flynn's move is also a boost for Newport County, who will receive 40 per cent of the transfer fee.

He said: "Just walking out and looking around the ground, it's like a dream come true for me.

"To be fair, I was just about to sign a new contract with Barry because, although there had been interest, there was nothing concrete to look at.

"I can only learn from the better players here and hopefully I can teach them a thing or two as well."
