Caersws begin Euro adventure
Bulgarian side FC Marek in action
Marek (in red) will prove tough for Caersws
League of Wales side Caersws begin their European adventure on Thursday when they fly off to Bulgaria for their Intertoto Cup clash with FC Marek (kick-off 1600 BST).

Saturday's match will be the first on the continent for the village with a population of almost 900, and a journey into the unknown for chairman Garth Williams.

Williams 62, has never been abroad in his life and had to apply for his first passport after his club booked their lace in Europe by finishing fourth in the League of Wales.

"I've never been on an aeroplane," he said. "The thought of flying doesn't frighten me though, and I'm sure I'll be fine when we go.

I've had offers to play elsewhere, but I want to keep playing in Wales
Caersws goalkeeper Matthew Griffiths

"I hardly ever go to England, let alone Bulgaria, so it will be different.

"That said, I did go to the Queen's garden party at Buckingham Palace two years ago and it was lovely to be introduced to her.

"But once we had finished I made sure we came straight back. I see no reason to leave Caersws - I love it here."

But if Williams is a man who likes to stay at home, Caersws 'keeper Matthew Griffiths is the opposite.

The 30-year-old financial adviser travels more than 600-miles a match to play for the Mid Wales side from his home in Edinburgh, which he shares with fiance Victoria.

He explained: "I suppose you could say I should make up my mind about my priorities. But it's great to play for Caersws and I want to spend as much time as I can with Victoria, who is expecting our first child.

Good display

"I left all my mates in Wrexham last September to be with her, but she knows the score. I'm committed to her, but also to the football club.

"I've had offers to play elsewhere, but I want to keep playing in Wales."

Caersws will make the trip to Dupnitsa, where Marek are based, in good heart after their fine finish to the season.

"We climbed the table steadily after a bad start," said chairman Williams. "We also retained the League Cup, after beating Cwmbran, so it was superb."

They will be hoping to put in a good display before the return match at Park Avenue, Aberystwyth, on Saturday, 29 June.

The winners will play either Czech side FC Brno or the Israelis of FC Ashdod.
