Striker Davies made a point with his late goal

Southampton striker Kevin Davies is hoping his FA Cup rescue act will earn him a move away from St Mary's this week.

Davies came off the bench to hit a late equaliser for Saints, just as visitors Millwall appeared set for a fourth round shock.

And his 88th-minute goal, which cancelled out Steve Claridge's opener for Millwall, was even sweeter as Davies spent a month on loan with the Lions earlier this season.

"It's been a strange season for me," admitted Davies.

"Going to Millwall did me good but it turned sour in the end.

"He just said it would be better if I went back to Southampton.

"I came back, no questions asked, because there was no point in being on loan and sitting on the bench.

"Injuries here have let me back in, though I've not been offered a new contract so I just have to do what I can do.

"I've got to get away from here.

Davies has now scored for both clubs this season

"There are a few days left in the transfer window and I've had a little bit of interest from different teams.

"I might not be around for the replay, but the squad is small here so I might be needed."

McGhee insisted he had no problems with Davies and was pleased he scored for Saints, even though it set up a fixture his own small squad could do without.

"Kevin did a good job for us and scored a few goals," said McGhee.

"His career has stalled a wee bit but he is a very likeable lad and we enjoyed having him.

"If scoring against us helps him then I have no problems with it."

Strachan also praised Davies' attitude and said: "I am delighted Kevin scored because he is a lovely lad.

"He played for the reserves on Tuesday and his work-rate was fantastic.

"He scored a goal and played very well, and he got himself a shot on the bench. It was only through his effort that he did that, not through good luck."
