Tranmere's Simon Haworth took his tally for the season to 17 goals with a headed winner at Plymouth.

Rovers leapfrogged Argyle in the play-off chase after Iain Hume beat home goalkeeper Romian Larrieu to the ball, and his pinpoint cross was met at the far post by Haworth.

Larrieu had made a superb one-handed save to keep out Howarth's 25-yard rocket two minutes earlier.

Plymouth's best opportunity fell to skipper Paul Wotton, whose thundering 30-yard drive looked in until Rovers goalkeeper John Achterberg palmed it over.

Earlier, David Worrell made a good clearance to deny Hume as he lobbed the ball over Larrieu and made his way to goal.

Plymouth threw defender Graham Coughlan forward in the seven minutes of stoppage time and came close through substitute Martin Phillips, but his shot flew over the crossbar.
