Alfreton manager Nicky Law says he is delighted to take a one-goal advantage into the second leg of the Blue Square North play-off semi-final.
Liam Hearn scored the only goal in the first leg win at Workington.
Law told BBC Radio Derby: "Credit to the players - they dug in and did the job. It's half-time now.
"We could have maybe pressured them a little bit more and created a few more chances but it was a matter of getting through the game, digging in."
Alfreton were unbeaten in the league against Workington - drawing 1-1 away and winning 2-0 at home.
They face the return leg at the Impact Arena on Sunday at 1500 BST.
In the other play-off semi-final, Droylsden netted a 2-0 home win over Fleetwood Town.
