Rochdale dropped to third in League Two behind Bournemouth as they lost to Burton in their final home game.
Chris O'Grady fired against the bar for the already-promoted hosts before Albion's Cleveland Taylor saw a cross dip over Kenny Arthur and into the net.
It was 2-0 when Craig Dawson felled Steve Kabba and Shaun Harrad sent Arthur the wrong way from the spot.
O'Grady netted a consolation by lofting into an empty net but it was Dale's sixth defeat in their last eight games.
Rochdale assistant manager Gary Flitcroft told BBC Radio Manchester:
"I think with what they've achieved this season the result can be forgiven.
"We dominated possession and were in control of the game but you've got to take your chances when you're so much in control.
"Whether you've been promoted or not there's still a sinking feeling inside, that at the minute I'm struggling to get out."
Burton assistant manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby:
"I think we had a spot of luck, but you earn your luck and we've told them (the players) that.
"I thought we dug in probably the best we've done in a while and perhaps did a little bit more than we've done in the last six or seven games.
"I thought, to be honest, we rode our luck early on, but I thought we thoroughly deserved something out of the game."
