Barrow duo on the path to success

Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison might have worked in tandem to guide Manchester City to the 1968 league title but generally joint-managers in modern day football have not been a success.

Gerard Houllier and Roy Evans failed to hit it off together at Liverpool.

Before them it was only when Alan Curbishley was given sole charge of Charlton, following his partnership with Steve Gritt, that the Addicks reached for the Premier League.

Yet further down the ladder at Barrow AFC, it is a management duo that has masterminded a remarkable resurgence that has sent the Bluebirds soaring back into the Blue Square Premier.

When Darren Sheridan and Dave Bayliss were given the chance to take charge of the Cumbrian club last November, relegation rather than promotion seemed a likelier option.

But following a club record 20-match unbeaten run, Barrow's surge up the Blue Square North table was rewarded with a play-off final win over Stalybridge Celtic which has taken Barrow back to within one promotion of the Football League place they relinquished in 1972.

"I'm glad they asked us, because look what's happened. It's been unbelievable. Everything at the club has gone right.

"When we had the meeting (with the board) I said 'we are pushing for the play-offs'. They all looked at each other thinking 'what's he on about'," Sheridan told BBC Sport.

"Me and Dave are similar characters. We want winners in our team and we have shown what we can do," said Sheridan, who previously played over 300 League games as a no-nonsense midfielder for Barnsley, Wigan and Oldham.

According to Sheridan, whose older brother John is the manager at Oldham Athletic, the secret so far has been about getting the best out of a squad not short of talent for their current level.

"We gave the lads the belief. They are good players. They have worked hard and shown a great commitment and they have been doing that week-in, week-out," he added.

Barrow's success has taken them back up to the top tier of non-league football which they last occupied in 1999.

Financial problems forced their expulsion then and a long-running wrangle over ownership of the ground made it a protracted salvage operation.

The road to recovery has not been smooth but with home gates reaching 2,500 for the climax of a famous season, Sheridan believes progress can be maintained.

"It will be hard and we need a few more bodies in. But I think we can cope with the next division," said the 40-year-old, who plans to play on next season when he can get into the team.

"I don't think we will go full-time but we will train an extra night and if the lads show the same commitment and we can get some players in we won't go far wrong.

"The first year has to be about just being in the league but if the crowds come, like they did at the end of this season, I think financially we will be okay.

"And if we get a few quid we will be able to look at bringing in players from higher leagues and who have been released from League clubs."

Sheridan and Bayliss, 31, who played as a central defender for Rochdale and Luton, are already scouring the market for new faces.

And despite Barrow's isolated position on the northern tip of Morecambe Bay, Manchester-based Sheridan believes the players will come.

"You hear about Barrow and the distance to it but people are taking note of what is happening," he said.
