Martins' goal made up for his earlier miss from the penalty spot
Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins made up for an earlier penalty miss by pulling Newcastle United level with visitors Arsenal with a 58th minute volley.
His goal was not enough, however, to save his struggling side from going down 3-1 to the Gunners.
Newcastle now lie third from bottom in the table and are facing a real battle to stay in the Premier League.
SPAIN
Mali striker Frederic Kanoute scored a hat-trick for Sevilla who beat Valladolid 4-1. The Malian now has 15 goals to his credit in La Liga for the season.
Samuel Eto'o scored twice in Barcelona's 6-0 rout over Malaga on Sunday. The Cameroonian is the runaway top scorer in Spain with 25 goals now for the table-toppers.
FRANCE
Bordeaux's Senegalese defender Souleymane Diawara headed in one of the goals against his former club Le Havre as his side triumphed 3-0. It was Diawara's second league goal of the season.
Another Senegalese player, midfielder Abdou Rahmane Managane was sent off early in the game between his side Rennes and Valenciennes.
Algeria midfielder Rafik Saifi scored Lorient's third goal in added time as they defeated Saint Etienne 3-1. It was Saifi's fourth goal this season.
DR Congo defender Larrys Mabiala scored on his league debut for Paris Saint-Germain when he pulled a goal back in the second half -- but could not save his side from losing 4-1 at Toulouse.
BELGIUM
Nigerian striker Joseph Akpala scored his 11th goal of the season for FC Bruges, who defeated Kortrijk 3-2.
South African defender Anele Ngongca hit the winning goal for Racing Genk as they beat Tubize 3-0.
Moroccan Abdelmajid Oulmers scored the only goal of the game as his side Charleroi beat Standard Liege 1-0 to go top of the league.
HOLLAND
There was just one African goal and it was scored by the Ivorian Sekou Cisse, who sealed victory for Roda JC as they defeated Den Haag 2-0.
GREECE
Algeria's Rafik Djebbour continued his prolific form as he scored the opening goal for AEK Athens in their 3-1 triumph over Levadiakos.
Ivorian striker Ibrahim Bakayoko scored a last minute winner for Paok Saloniki to give his side a 2-1 victory over Thrasyvoulos.
TURKEY
DR Congo striker Patiyo Tambwe was sent off with less than 15 minutes remaining as his side lost 2-1 at home to Antalyaspor.
And Cameroonian Herve Tum put Sivasspor ahead as they drew 1-1 with Besiktas.
