The Premier League gave way to the third round of the FA Cup. In one of the biggest shocks, mighty Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Southend of League One, the third tier of English football.
The minnows ensured a replay in their own backyard with a last-minute equaliser after Salomon Kalou - the Ivory Coast striker - had given Chelsea the lead in the first half.
FRANCE
Marseille - who have won the Cup a record 10 times but have not triumphed since 1989 - were losing 1-0 with seven minutes left in normal time when Nigerian defender Taye Taiwo equalised from the penalty spot to send the game into extra time.
Marseille then won the shoot-out 5-4.
Paris St Germain needed a second-half goal from Benin midfielder Stephane Sessegnon to beat another fourth division Montlucon 1-0.
Sessegnon tapped in from a corner on 52 minutes to make sure last season's losing finalists survived the first round involving top-flight clubs.
PORTUGAL
Trofense ended Benfica's unbeaten start to the season with a 2-nil home win.
Benfica finished the match with 10 men after Cameroon midfielder Augustin Binya was sent-off for two bookable offences.
SPAIN
Action resumed after the annual winter break. Barcelona extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches with a 3-1 home win against Mallorca with one of the goals coming from the Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure.
Samuel Eto'o - the league leading scorer with 15 goals - failed to get on the scoresheet but the Cameroonian impressed coach Pep Guardiola by returning to Spain three days early from holiday.
Deportivo La Coruna's Equatorial Guinea international striker Rodolfo Bodipo got his club's first goal in their 2-1 win at Getafe, hammering home a corner from the edge of the six yard box to put his side ahead after just six minutes.
It was the third consecutive game in which Bodipo has scored after returning to the side in mid-December, following a month out of action with a knee injury.
