| Tuesday, 12 November, 2002, 23:09 GMT Port Vale 1-1 Chesterfield (4-3 pens) Port Vale beat Chesterfield 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to progress to the next round of the LDV Vans Trophy. Defender Sam Collins scored the decisive spot-kick after the tie finished 1-1 after extra-time. Both sides missed three out of their first six penalties and it was left to Collins to net after Alan O'Hare fired wide for the Spireites. Chesterfield opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Jon Howard's shot was palmed away by Mark Goodlad and Chris Brandon fired home. Vale pushed forward in search of the equaliser and they were rewarded in the 29th minute when Ian Armstrong curled home a shot from 16 yards. After a goalless second half the tie went into extra-time. Chesterfield were reduced to 10 men when Andy Rushbury was dismissed for a late challenge on Stephen McPhee in the 92nd minute. But it came down to penalties and Collins was his side's hero with his clincher. Port Vale: Goodlad, Carragher, Burns, Collins, Rowland, Cummins, Boyd, Bridge-Wilkinson, Charnock, McPhee, Armstrong.
