A draw was seemingly the only result on the cards in any event after Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid defied the home attack on the fourth day to make an unbeaten 144. And umpires Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva needed only a few minutes after arriving at the waterlogged ground to decide that no play would be possible. "The water level outside in the drains is very high. There's virtually no chance of draining and no way we can get the ground cleared," Harper explained.
Both teams were able to take positives from the game with West Indies, who ended a run of five successive defeats, focussing on the batting of skipper Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Hooper's superb 233 and Chanderpaul's 140 were the highest scores of their Test careers, and together they shared a stand of 293. The West Indies captain would have been less happy, however, about criicism of his tactics with newspapers accusing him of being over-cautious by deciding not to declare on the third morning. India came into the match with only one warm-up game behind them and they did well to get within five runs of 400 after losing their first two wickets with only 21 on the board. The two teams now move on to Trinidad, where the second Test match begins on Friday.
