Chanderpaul back to best
Chanderpaul celebrates
Chanderpaul reached his third Test ton off Sarandeep
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was delighted to breaking his recent run of poor form with a Test-best 140 against India on the second day in Georgetown.

The 27-year-old Guyanese had scored just 196 in his last five Tests.

But he shared in a record 293-run fifth wicket partnership with captain Carl Hooper, who hammered 233 as West Indies piled up 494 for seven in their first innings.

It's great to your highest in Test cricket in front of your home fans

The pair beat the 49-year old record of 219 for the fifth wicket against India, held by Everton Weekes and Bruce Pairaudeau.

"This knock was very important for the team and also for me," Chanderpaul said.

"Considering the bad patch I've been going through, I desperately wanted something like this to happen."

The left-hander said his lacklustre batting form had a lot to do with his being in and out of international cricket for the last three years.

Chanderpaul has missed 17 Tests in the last three years due to various reasons - a back injury, a stress fracture in his left foot and finally because of poor domestic form.

"When you're out of cricket because of an injury, you come back and don't get into form that quickly. It takes time," he said.

Hometown heroes

The middle-order batsman was particularly thrilled because the knock had come in the Bourda cricket ground at his hometown.

Hooper blasted 29 fours
Chanderpaul and Hooper, who came together with the total 157 for four, became the first Guyanese pair to score a hundred in the same match at Bourda.

"It's great to your highest in Test cricket, something that you really wanted, in front of your home fans with family and friends watching," he said.

It was only the third Test hundred for Chanderpaul, who also has 23 half centuries.

Chanderpaul said the West Indies, seeking to bounce back from five straight test losses, would now look to press for victory.

"The Indian team is a good one but we've got a good score and the wicket is keeping low. From here on, anything's possible."
