![]() | Fightback delights Ganguly ![]() Good batting and poor weather came to India's rescue India captain Sourav Ganguly was pleased with the fighting spirit displayed by his side in the first Test against West Indies. India scored 395 for seven in response to their hosts first innings total of 501 before rain washed out Sunday's last session and the entire fifth day of play on Monday. "I think we batted pretty well in the circumstances," Ganguly said. "Things were not looking all that bright after we lost a few quick wickets.
"But the batsmen responded to the challenge and we were still going with almost 400 already on the board in the end." "It was the first Test of the series, and it's always difficult to do well right at the beginning on an away tour because you're not used to the conditions and the wickets. "Considering that, we are glad to put this match behind us. There are a lot of plusses for us on the batting front and we'll be looking to build from here." One of the positives was the performance of Rahul Dravid, who finished 144 not out, and was pivotal in the comeback. Sachin Tendulkar scored 79 and opener Shiv Sundar Das looked good for his 33. Coach John Wright said: "It should be a good, hard series and we're glad that four of our top six batsmen did well." However, Ganguly rued numerous missed chances, which he felt could have given the test a different perspective. "We couldn't capitalise at all when we had them at 44 for three," he said.
"It was a good batting wicket and on such a surface you just have to hold on to whatever chances come your way." Wicket keeping remains a problem area for India with Deep Dasgupta guilty of dropping three straightforward catches. Wright said Dasgupta's performance was "a big improvement from Delhi but we still have to analyse his work behind the wickets". Meanwhile, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who missed the first Test with a shoulder injury, is likely to be fit for the second Test starting on Friday. "He should be okay for the Test. I'm pretty confident he will be fit to play," said Wright. |
