Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath has announced his retirement from Test cricket.

Srinath wants to concentrate exclusively on one-day cricket with a view to being part of the Indian squad for next year's World Cup in South Africa.

His retirement comes with immediate affect which means he will not tour England with India this summer.

"It has been in my mind for quite some time, six or seven months," he told a media conference in Bangalore on Saturday.

"I still have some cricket left in me and would like to focus on the World Cup."

The 32-year-old took 232 wickets in 64 Tests since his debut in Australia in 1991-92, including 13 in the recent five-match series in the West Indies.

Srinath burst into the Test side as a 21-year-old tearaway and then made a fine comeback after surgery on his bowling shoulder in 1997 which had threatened to end his career.

He led the Indian attack since Kapil Dev's retirement in 1994.

Srinath performed with distinction for Gloucestershire in 1995, when he took 87 wickets in the County Championship at a cost of only 19.09 each.

His desire to focus on one-day cricket is not unique, with South Africans Jonty Rhodes and Allan Donald now concentrating on the shorter form of the game after opting out of Tests.
