A dogged eighth-wicket stand between Rahul Dravid and Sarandeep Singh made a draw with West Indies look increasingly likely on the fourth day in Georgetown.

Dravid's 10th Test century took India past the follow-on target on the fourth morning, and he was joined by Sarandeep to add an unbeaten 120 in 42 overs.

Sarandeep, in his third Test, was 40 not out when heavy rain brought an early tea break, with India 395 for seven - 106 runs in arrears.

And the continuing downpour meant that play was brought to a premature end with no further action possible.

Dravid, who survived being struck on the jaw by a Mervyn Dillon bouncer in the morning, had faced 347 deliveries in an unbeaten 144, including 23 boundaries.

The partnership was a record for the Indian eighth wicket against the men from the Caribbean, passing the 107 shared by Yashpal Sharma and Balwinder Singh Sandu at Sabina Park in 1983.

Cameron Cuffy celebrates a wicket
Cuffy took two wickets in successive overs
Two quick wickets for Cameron Cuffy had looked like giving the home side back the edge, after India made an assured start to the day on a slow pitch.

A 119-run fifth wicket partnership between Dravid and VVS Laxman was stopped in full flow when Cuffy had Laxman caught at slip for 69.

Sanjay Bangar was lbw in Cuffy's next over and Anil Kumble was snaffled at point to leave the tourists seven wickets down and still 27 short of avoiding the follow-on.

But Dravid and Sarandeep kept a quick tempo, afforded a relaxed field by home captain Carl Hooper.

And on-field body language bagan to sag quickly as the Indian tail wagged with style.

West Indies: Carl Hooper (captain), Christopher Gayle, Stuart Williams, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brian Lara, Shivnaraine Chanderpaul, Junior Murray, Mervyn Dillon, Cameron Cuffy, Adam Sanford, Mahendra Nagamootoo.

India: Saurav Ganguly (captain), Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Deep Dasgupta, Shiv Sundar Das, Vangipurappu Laxman, Sanjay Bangar, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, Sarandeep Singh, Zaheer Khan.
