Ricky Ponting scored an unbeaten 100 to steer Australia to a tense series-clinching victory against South Africa in the second Test in Cape Town.

Ponting smashed a six from the last ball to reach three figures and secure a four wicket win for Australia in the same blow.

He also struck 16 fours in his 160-ball century, and steadied the ship when Australia suffered a wobble towards the end of their run chase.

Ponting shared in a second wicket stand of 99 with Matthew Hayden, who just missed out on a fifth consecutive Test century, that provided the foundations for Australia.

South African spinner Paul Adams opened the bowling but Ponting and Hayden blasted 18 off his first two overs to hit him out of the attack.

Hayden had edged one Kallis delivery just short of first slip on 90 but could not resist chasing a wide one in the bowler's next over, and touched it to wicket keeper Mark Boucher on 96.

The wicket appeared flatter than at any time during the Test, alowing Ponting and Mark Waugh to put on 50 runs for the third wicket as South Africa's fast bowlers struggled to extract any bounce.

Waugh would have been run out going for a single if Ashwell Prince's throw had been on target, but he edged a Makhaya Ntini delivery to Boucher in the last over of the morning session.

Adams returned to the attack after lunch to claim the wickets of Steve Waugh and Damien Martyn in successive overs, to give South Africa a glimmer of hope.

He produced a googly that got through Waugh's gate to peg back his leg stump, and then pinned Damien Martyn lbw.

But Adam Gilchrist strode to the crease to blast a run-a-ball 24 that shattered South Africa's hopes, and Ponting provided the icing on the cake after Gilchrist has pulled Kallis to midwicket.

The winning score easily eclipsed the previous highest total for victory in a Test at Cape Town's Newlands ground of just 180

It was the 10th highest 4th innings score chasing for victory in all Tests, and the win confirmed Australia's status as World Test Championship title holders.
