Ponting seeks all-round improvement
Ricky Ponting
Ponting made a winning start as one-day skipper
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes their one-day team still has room for improvement despite their 5-1 victory in South Africa.

Following the squad's return home, Ponting identified the the need to find a quality all-rounder as an area of particular concern.

Ian Harvey has filled the role in recent years, but managed only five wickets in five games at a cost of 46.25 runs each and his highest score was 19.

Ponting's Tasmanian teammate Shane Watson also failed to impress on his first tour with the senior side, averaging 9.25 with the bat and conceding runs at almost six an over.

"The all-rounder's spot is probably one we would like to make a little bit better," acknowledged Ponting.

He offered words of encouragement for Watson, however, and the 20-year-old will be hoping for further opportunities to stake a claim for a World Cup place.

"I thought in the last game he looked really good with the bat.

"His bowling has a little bit of improving to do and hopefully, over the next 12 months, he can play some more cricket and he'll keep on improving."

Welcome break

Ponting, meanwhile, enjoyed his first taste of international captaincy.

"I feel very comfortable in the role. There's probably still a lot of learning and experience for me to gain over the next 12 months leading into the World Cup.

"But the more cricket I can play and lead the team, the better off we're going to be."

Australia were due to go on to Zimbabwe following the end of the series in South Africa, but the tour was cancelled because of safety concerns.

"With all due respect to the situation in Zimbabwe, and Zimbabwe cricket, it is great to be home and I think all the players are looking forward to having a month off they didn't have before," vice-captain Adam Gilchrist commented.

Australia will return to action in June for the Super Challenge II series against Pakistan, the first two games to be played indoors at Melbourne's Colonial Stadium.
