![]() | Tuesday, 12 March, 2002, 16:46 GMT Gilchrist second in rankings ![]() Gilchrist was close to top world ranking Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist has moved to joint second place in the Pricewaterhouse Cooper Test batting rankings after his latest century. Gilchrist scored 138 not out and 24 during Australia's victory over South Africa in the second Test at Cape Town. He would have overtaken Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the list had South Africa's bowling attack not been so weakened through injuries.
Fellow Australian batsman Matthew Hayden remains in fourth after just missing out on his fifth consecutive Test ton in the same match. Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara has shot up 13 places to sixth following his double century against Pakistan. In the bowling rankings, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan extends his lead over Australia's Glenn McGrath. The spinner took eight wickets during Sri Lanka's win over Pakistan in the Asian Test Championship.
There is no movement in the top four placings, but Shane Warne has achieved his highest ever rating of 762. Warne was named man-of-the-match in the Cape Town Test after bowling a mammoth 70 overs in South Africa's second innings and finishing with figures of 6-163. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Cricket stories: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||
