First Test, Mohali, day four:
India (469 & 5-0) beat England (238 & 235) by 10 wickets

Spinner Anil Kumble took six for 81 as India completed a 10-wicket first Test victory over England at Mohali.

The tourists were bowled out for 235 in their second innings, avoiding an innings defeat but leaving India needing just five runs for victory.

And Iqbal Siddiqui, promoted to the top of the order after coming in eleventh in the first innings, achieved the target in just two balls.

After seamer Tinu Yohannan had accounted for both England openers, Kumble knifed through the middle order, dismissing Mark Ramprakash and Andrew Flintoff in the space of three balls.

Only Graham Thorpe stood firm with a daring innings of 62 but he became the wrist spinner's fifth victim, caught and bowled.

After the early success of pace, India captain Sourav Ganguly took his time over bowling Kumble and spin partner Harbhajan Singh in tandem.

But when he did it had instant results.

Ramprakash, who had not looked at home against Kumble through a 61-ball innings, was struck on the pad by a top-spinner to end a fourth wicket stand worth 62 with Thorpe.

Flintoff, on his 24th birthday, arrived with a driven four through long on but he was gone second ball, caught off bat and pad by Ganguly at silly point.

Harbhajan took care of the lower middle order, having White caught off an edged forward defensive for an aggressive 22, and Foster leg before attempting to sweep.

And Kumble then enhanced his figures with the scalps of James Ormond and Richard Dawson.

The pair accounted for 15 of the 20 English wickets to fall in the match - a heavy omen ahead of two Tests on surfaces supposedly more supportive of spin.

Butcher and Trescothick had added 36 to their overnight total on the fourth morning, with Trescothick taking the lead.

But Butcher faced 90 balls for his 18 and his frustration brought his downfall.

Yohannan got the breakthrough in the ninth over of the day when the Surrey left-hander top-edged a pull to substitute fielder Jacob Martin at deep point.

Trescothick moved on from his overnight 16 to 46, living dangerously against the seamer but sweeping Harbhajan with ease.

His aggression went too far, though, in a hook shot which found a diving Siddiqui at long leg three overs later.

Kumble was brought into the attack especially for Nasser Hussain, whom he had dismissed for 85 in the first innings.

The England captain greeted his arrival with consecutive fours but he was looking to cut for another boundary when he bottom-edged into his stumps for 12.
