India cruised past England's first innings total with seven wickets in hand thanks to a century from Deep Dasgupta in the first Test at Mohali.

The wicketkeeper-opener crafted his first Test ton off 253 balls, including 15 fours, in only his third match before Craig White found a hint of reverse swing to bowl him.

England were left staring at a massive first innings deficit after managing to take just two wickets and conceding a lead of 24 runs on the second day.

Rahul Dravid, unbeaten on 78, and Sachin Tendulkar put on 50 for the fourth wicket as India ended the day on 262-3.

Sachin Tendulkar

Tendulkar passed the milestone of scoring 1,000 runs against England on his way to 31 not out.

Dasgupta and Dravid benefited from dropped catches, both off the bowling of Andrew Flintoff, either side of tea as they shared a third wicket partnership of 146.

Wicketkeeper James Foster spilled a legside chance offered by Dravid when he tickled a lifter on 33, and Mark Butcher dropped a slip catch off Dasgupta when he had scored 75.

Dravid rubbed salt into England's wounds by reaching his 50 and bringing up the 100 partnership with a boundary.

Flintoff toiled manfully and repeatedly beat the outside edge without any success.

Nasser Hussain & Richard Dawson
Hussain congratulates wicket taker Dawson
England debutant off-spinner Richard Dawson took his first Test wicket before lunch when he had Anil Kumble caught behind by Foster, chasing a wide flighted delivery.

The nightwatchman played well for his 37 and blunted England's new ball attack in the morning by sharing in a second wicket partnership of 53 with Dasgupta.

Dawson was England's most impressive bowler in the opening session and caused problems for India until Dasgupta and Dravid hit him out of the attack with three boundaries in his 13th over.

It was the story of the day for England's bowlers who found little in the wicket to help them, and they face another long day in the field.
