Marcus Trescothick said England's batsmen must learn to counter the threat of India's spin sensation Harbhajan Singh if they are to win the series.

Singh bamboozled England's middle-order batsmen with his master class in off-break bowling to take 5-51 on a pitch that was supposed to favour seamers.

England's vice-captain said they will be working hard to get to grips with Singh.

We are disappointed with what we got in regards to what we were at lunch
Marcus Trescothick

"We have encountered world class spinners like Saqlain Mushtaq and Muttiah Muralitharan in the past and done well against them," Trescothick said.

"There is no reason why we can't counter Harbhajan. We hope to improve against spin as the series goes on.

"The important thing is we have to be more disciplined in our batting if we are to sort out Harbhajan.

"We will have to address it pretty quickly, though, because we are right into the heart of the Test series."

Trescothick, who made 66 and shared in a 125-run second wicket stand with Nasser Hussain, said he could not explain why England collapsed from 200-3 to 238 all out.

"We are disappointed with what we got in regards to what we were at lunch," he said.

"It's something to improve on - to almost give it away was quite disappointing and we will have to work hard on it not to let it happen again."
