Trescothick named as vice-captain

Trescothick believes his England career is on hold

Somerset's Marcus Trescothick has been appointed the club's vice-captain for next season.

Trescothick will take on the role from Andy Caddick, who is stepping down to concentrate on his play.

Director of cricket, Brian Rose, told BBC Radio Bristol: "He has progressed wonderfully well over the last two years. It was a natural progression.

"He has come to the age and the maturity where he wants to take on some more responsibility."

Rose added: "I think it is very important that the captain and the vice-captain play virtually every game that they can barring injuries."

"The philosophy about the management of the club and the direction we are going, the training process is important.

"To have a continuity over the next two-to-three years is very important. I think Marcus will take us there."

Rose said the new role for Trescothick may lead to captaincy for Somerset in the future.

"To have a captain who has played a hundred and something tests for Australia and the vice-captain probably 60-70 tests is a fantastic thing for us to have up our sleeve.

"It would be great for the future of the club if there is going to be a Somerset-born captain in the next two years."

Trescothick has played full time for Somerset for the last two-and-a-half seasons.
