Berkshire defeat Lincs for title

Berkshire took 16 Lincolnshire wickets on the last day of the Minor Counties Championship final to win their first title in 55 years.

Off-spinner Carl Crowe took 11 wickets as their northern opponents were bowled out for 105 and 311.

Berkshire had 13 overs to score 59 and despite losing David Barnes in the first over, made it with time to spare.

Mitchell Stokes made 35, Steve Naylor was unbeaten on 15 and Craig Crowe had the honour of hitting the winning runs.

Berkshire captain Bjorn Mordt told BBC Radio Berkshire he woke up thinking it could be their day.

"I said to the boys in the morning, if we can get a full day's play here, I think we have an 80% chance of winning.

"The first hour was fantastic, when we took six wickets very quickly and put them back in.

It's all about belief - we believed we could win it and believed that all the way through the day - even through the tough parts

"They batted very well in the second innings, but after tea we had that spell when we took another five wickets quickly and when we only needed 59, I had no doubt that we'd get it."

Spinner Carl Crowe added that it was the team spirit that brought them victory.

"In between the lunch and tea intervals I was starting to think that we might be struggling. The wicket was looking flat and they were playing well.

"But we had a bit of a chat at tea and the energy we had in the dressing room was fantastic.

"I had a genuine belief that we would go out there and do it and from tea onwards we bossed it."

Mordt agreed with his team-mate and said: "It's all about belief - we believed we could win it and believed that all the way through the day - even through the tough parts.

"We've had a couple of sticky situations this year and we've been able to pull ourselves out of it, which makes us stronger as a team."

Berkshire coach Tim Dellor said hard work had also been crucial for his side's victory.

"For now we'll just enjoy what we've done because this has been an unbelievable season.

"They worked all the way through the winter, trying to get ready for the season.

"Today's the glory day, but it's the cold days in Cambourne in June which is what it's all about, building up to this."

Amongst those watching at Falkland Cricket Club was Arthur Cuthbertson, part of Berkshire's title-winning team from 1953.

Mordt said: "I spoke to Arthur and he had a bit of a tear in his eye to see it happen again. It was fantastic to be able to do it and hopefully we won't have to wait another 50 years.

"We want to come back next year and defend the title and also get back to Lord's and have another go at the knock-out cup."

Lincolnshire director of cricket Mark Fell told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "I think a few of them have played like boys.

"This team haven't become a bad team overnight they have just performed badly in this game."
