Dawson was Man of the Match as Devon won the MCCA Trophy

Devon have won the MCCA Trophy for the first time in a decade after beating Berkshire by 40 runs at Lord's.

Devon captain Bobby Dawson was the star of the show, scoring 96 as he and Chris Mole (67) put on 182 for the second wicket in a total of 290-3.

Neil Hancock chipped in with a vital 53 runs off 26 balls as he and David Lye scored 79 in the last five overs.

Ian Bishop then took four wickets for 40 and Hancock had three as they bowled out Berkshire for 250 off 48 overs.

Dawson's innings of 96 won him the man of the match honours and the skipper told BBC Spotlight that the a trophy win was his main aim this season.

"The whole thing was geared up to try and win this competition," he said.

"It's the only one we've never won since I've been in charge so it's been a great day.

"We haven't had the luck in the past. We've lost some bowl-outs, we've lost semi-finals and it was a real key to finally get over the hurdle and win one," he added.

And Neil Hancock, whose quickfire 53 at the end of the innings all but sealed the win for Devon, was quick to praise his team-mates.

"We've got a good group of players here. They all seem keen and they all want to carry on playing so hopefully we'll do well and be back here next year."

But Dawson says he may regret not staying around for an extra four runs to score a century at Lord's.

"In a couple of days I'll look back at it and think it'd be nice if I'd got a hundred. I've never scored one at Lord's," he added.
