Arthur wants a fight with Glaswegian Craig Docherty |
Alex Arthur has challenged Craig Docherty to an inter-city Scottish showdown in December. The Edinburgh fighter retained his IBF Intercontinental super-featherweight title against Eric Odumasi on Friday.
The 26-year-old now wants a crack at Glasgow's Craig Docherty, who recently lost his bid for the European title.
"The British title is lying vacant and all I need is Docherty to go for it," said Arthur. "Let's go Docherty - let's do it."
For the two Scots to go head-to-head, rival promoters Frank Warren and Tommy Gilmour will have to come to an agreement.
And Gilmour, who saw Docherty lose out on points to Russian Boris Sinitsin earlier this month, said back in March that he didn't think his man needed a fight with Arthur.
Arthur's main aim is a rematch with Michael Gomez, who stopped him in brutal style a year ago. "I really need to keep active because I am convinced the more active I am the better I am," Arthur continued. "I hope to fight Gomez in February but I want to get back in December.
"I want one more fight before that one and if Tommy Gilmour is easy to work with then I want to fight Craig. I just hope I've not said something wrong."
Arthur had only had three minutes in the ring since losing to Gomez - his only professional defeat to date in a battle that was named British fight of the year.
That first-round stoppage of Michael Kizza in March earned him the IBF intercontinental title, which he defended with a sixth-round stoppage of Odumasi.
The Ghanian was knocked to the floor three times before the referee intervened to save him from any more punishment. Warren said: "Gomez won't be next but maybe that will be next year in February.
"It's all about money and we have to recognise he is the champion and he rightly wants it in Manchester so we will have to wait and see."
