Druce said he had been spurred on by his Island Games performance

Guernsey athlete Tom Druce says he is confident he can run faster than ever before, as he prepares for one of the most important years of his career.

The 23-year-old 400m specialist clocked an indoor time of 47.72 seconds, at the Vienna Classic this week.

The time was just five one hundredths of a second outside his personal best.

Druce said: "It's just a matter of time before I break, I hope. I'm very confident I can run faster than I did last season."

Druce added: "My three best 400m were probably at the Island Games within 24 hours, with the semi final and the final of the individual and then the final of the relay.

"I'm thinking that if I can do that, if I can produce three top runs in that space of time then hopefully with a lot of hard work, I can pull out a couple of bigger times this year."
