Tom Druce won the 400m |
The Channel Islands Athletics Club put in a winning performance on Saturday to avoid relegation from Division Four. The club went into the final meeting in the British Athletics League just off the bottom of the table, requiring a win against Coventry to stay up. But the club managed to do better than that by winning the meeting and saving themselves in the process. Guernsey Athlete Tom Druce said: "We got all our top guys out... It wasn't really ever in serious doubt." "There was a fair bit of pressure, personally I felt fairly comfortable we were going to be alright from the beginning," said Druce. "Going into the final couple of events we knew what we had to do in the relays and we're always really strong in those events." Druce was on top form for the meeting having just set a new personal best of 1.51.78 in the 800m Sydney Wooderson Memorial race on Wednesday. The only top athlete missing from the side was Lee Merrien, gold medal winner in the 5000m and 1500m at this year's Island Games.
