 Garland set a new record at the Hampshire county championships |
Dale Garland set a new championship record of 51 seconds as he took gold in 400m hurdles at the Hampshire Track and Field Championships. His success came as as the Guernsey team won seven gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals. The Sarnians were competing against 600 of the best county athletes in the event held last weekend. "Our young team exceeded expectations, we can now progress with confidence," said club president Alun Williams. Ben Fiore's throw of 47m in the javelin won gold to go with the medals he won in the shot, hammer and discus. Louise Perrio took a fast paced 3000m in a new personal best of 10 minutes and eight seconds. Lee Garland's gold in the 3000m steeplechase came after he built up a 200m lead by halfway and then hung on to win by five seconds. Glenn Etherington was half a second clear in the 110m sprint hurdles. Meanwhile there was a series of personal bests in the high jump for Hannah Browning and Ross Hanley, who both took bronze in their age categories.
