Games entrants face drug checks

Athletes from the Channel Islands will face random drug tests at this year's Island Games.

Plans to introduce drug checks at the event have been discussed for many years but this will be the first year that competitors will be tested.

Many prescription medicines, such as Ventolin which is used by asthmatics, are on the list of banned substances.

Therefore competitors who take such drugs will need to get a form signed by their doctor before the Games start.

The event, which is held every other year, will be staged in the Swedish-speaking Finnish island of Aland this summer.

Jersey is set to send 251 competitors, while 218 are planning to go from Guernsey, 31 from Alderney and six from Sark.

The games, which were first held in the Isle of Man in 1985, will begin on 27 June.
