Dallaglio shocked the rugby world by criticising England coach Brian Ashton just days after the World Cup final. In extracts from his autobigoraphy, he claimed the top job "demands management skills that Brian does not have" and that the players felt like a "pub team". But on confirming his retirement from England, Dallaglio said his decision had "nothing whatsoever to do with Brian Ashton and my post-World Cup observations concerning his preparation early in the tournament".
