A chastened Dallaglio returned to the international fold, and played in all five of England's matches at the 1999 World Cup. It was a mediocre campaign from England's perspective as they crashed out in the quarter-finals at the hands of South Africa in a match that saw Jannie de Beer famously land five drop-goals. Dallaglio may not have had the captain's armband any more, but there was no doubt that he was still a key performer and motivator as England looked to move forward.
